Obama Minimizes US’ Role In Taking Down the Iron Curtain

Major Garrett (Fox News) spoke to Jim Jones, Obama’s adviser, who was present during the two hour meeting between Putin and Obama. The video is below. Obama dismisses the idea that the US was largely responsible for tearing down the Iron Curtain, and mentioned some of the leaders (like Lech Walesa) in other Eastern European countries which went through mostly “peaceful revolutions” in 1989.
I think Obama missed the fact that the US is a super-power and, as such, had really immense power in orchestrating the bringing down the Iron Curtain. Yes, to some extent, we have to recognize other players, but, again the position of the US is, or was, a key factor in spreading democracy. However, in Iran, Obama elected not to support the freedom-fighters; in Honduras, he is backing a dictator.
I think it is also deceptive of him to minimize the role of the US in advancing democracy, and I think it is because he himself is opposed to democracy. According to Taurillon.org,”at the end of the Brejnev era, the socialist bloc rather resembled an old dinosaur, far removed from the contemporary world. The economy was in a deplorable state, independent civil society was largely in exile, and corruption within the state via the Communist Party had become legendary. In addition, the USSR had to devote an enormous portion of its budget to the military…Pérestroïka was ultimately the determining factor in the fall of the Iron Curtain. The forces it unleashed, such as freedom of speech (glasnost), by Gorbachev inside his country had devoured the communist parties of Eastern Europe.” Essentially the inspiration of the U.S.A.’s democratic model created Pérestroïka.
I also think it was really funny of P.M. Putin to talk about the Cold War for the first hour of his meeting with Obama, as a response to Obama’s idiotic description of Putin having “one foot in the past, and one in the future.” Apparently, Obama has not read the reports of Putin giving him advice not to go down the socialist path, which occurred when Putin was lecturing at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in February 2009, according to The right Perspective. Apparently, Obama wasn’t listening, or didn’t do any “protocol” research before embarking on his trip to Moscow.
Putin said, (believe it or not) “Nor should we turn a blind eye to the fact that the spirit of free enterprise, including the principle of personal responsibility of businesspeople, investors, and shareholders for their decisions, is being eroded in the last few months. There is no reason to believe that we can achieve better results by shifting responsibility onto the state.” WOW!!!
