Blagojevich’s Kung-Fu Politics
In an amazing Kung-fu political move, embroiled Governor Blagojevich has appointed former state Attorney General Roland Burris to the Senate seat vacated by Mr. Obama. There were immediate outcries from Lt. Gov Pat Quinn and the Secretary of State.
However, they may not have anything to say about it, legally. Mr Burris is a senior statesman from Illinois with a long history of public service. After the announcement, Congressman Bobby Rush took the stage and adamantly stated that it would be a disgrace not to replace Mr. Obama with another Afro-American, as that would leave the Senate without an Afro-American Senator.
House Majority leader Harry Reid has said that he will block the nomination. I would say, at this time, these outcries are much too premature and the politicians concerned have not had a chance to think adequately through their options.
Frankly, I think that opposing this appointment would be political suicide for many of these politicians, since Roland Burris is so highly esteemed a statesman, and since Bobby Rush has made such an emotional appeal. Also, this might be the only chance the Democrats will have to get a Democrat in that position. If it goes to a special election, surely the populace will vote in a Republican.
I think that basically the politicians were totally caught off guard by this brilliant
tactical move by Governor Blagojevich. Both Bobby Rush and the Governor implored the Public and the Press for Mr Burris to be seated, and not to be tainted by the allegations against the Governor. It is highly doubtful that he would not be seated as a Senator, since the only disqualification would be his lack of qualification or constitutional ineligibility.
Barack Obama himself has weighed in on this issue, saying that Mr Burris is a fine man, but that Governor Blagojevich doesn’t have the power to appoint him. I could be wrong, but I think possibly Obama wanted his own appointee in there, and I think that Governor Blagojevich definitely has the power.
Mr. Burris would serve until the term is finished in 2010 and then decide to run again if he so chose.
